Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge

Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge

Located east of Titusville, Florida, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge(MINWR) was established in 1963 as an overlay of NASA’s John F. Kennedy Space Center. The Refuge, managed by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, provides a buffer zone for NASA. Consisting of 140,000 acres, the Refuge provides a wide variety of habitats: coastal dunes, saltwater estuaries and marshes, freshwater impoundments, scrub, pine flatwoods, and hardwood hammocks provide habitat for more than 500 species of wildlife with 15 being listed as federally threatened or endangered.
