Soweto is an urban settlement or 'township' in South Africa, southwest of Johannesburg, with a population of approximately 1.3 million. Soweto was created in the 1930s when the White government started seperating Blacks from Whites. Blacks were moved away from Johannesburg, to an area separated from White suburbs by a so-called cordon sanitaire (or sanitary corridor) this was usually a river, a railway track, an industrial area or a highway etc..
We spent a morning first visiting Walter Sisulu Square in the heart of Kliptown, Soweto, and then getting immersed in the local culture and visiting a family within the township.
We also had a visit and talk by Antoinette Sithole, the sister of Hector Pieterson, a 12-year old boy who was killed on June 16, 1976, when police opened fire on thousands of schoolchildren who were protesting against Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in township schools.

These were the cooling towers of the original Orlando Power Station. They are now part of a 330' bungee jump.
