65th

65th Infantry Division:
The Battle Axe Division

The 65th Division was activated as a component of the
Army of the United States on August 1 6th, 1 943, with
Headquarters at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, and embarked
for overseas in January of 1945

The shoulder patch worn by the 65th was approved for wear on
May 25th, 1943. The basic design of the patch is a halberd
which is a form of battle ax with a pike at the end which
was used by early foot soldiers to cut through enemy
resistance, and this was also the WW II mission of the
men who wore the Battle Axe insignia.
