Day 3 (July 10), Exploring Avalon
Many changes occurred in Avalon. Zane Gray Pueblo is not an active hotel anymore, neither is the classic Hotel Catherina (built 1911). "The Landing", with our favorite upstairs restaurant was totally fenced off, and apparently, a spa is being constructed in its place. The Avalon Museum will be relocated from the lower level under the Casino into a dedicated building. Virtually all exhibits are already gone, merely pictures hang on walls. Most dedicated to Merilyn Monroe and Charlie Chaplin's romance. Kids were disappointed. "Who is Chaplin?" they asked... Such is all fame, fading with the time, like an old picture! Interesting was to demystify the Descanso Beach: Ranked high in some lists with the "best beaches in California," this beach was rather disappointing to me and to our kids alike. We expected splendid swimming, and a great sand. In reality the sand is stony and not very friendly to feet. And otherwise, nothing of interest at all. We remembered foremost booths selling entry fees... Our kids voted to return to Avalon, and to swim there. |
