Balboa-Avalon, Feb.2009

Taking a Catalina 30 "Sea Shells" to Avalon, Catalina Island (21 to 23 Feb. 2009)

With almost 4 years passing since our last sail to Avalon, next adventure was "overdue." We sailed with only 3 people aboard, with one person returning earlier via ferry, and one person joining us in Avalon the next day. Other than the crew swap, the trip has proven to be uneventful. Mild winds forced us to run engine in order to make distance. We arrived at dusk, docked... Our nightly dinghy operations happen to be somewhat memorable... A good story for a campfire talk.

The harbor of Avalon was as empty as I never saw it before, it was almost sad to see it that empty. It was cloudy for the most part of the time. We still enjoyed Avalon Town, which was also unmistakeably quieter. The downturn in economy has clearly taken its tall on visitor numbers.

Our charter was again with the friendly Marina Sailing, which has not less than six locations in Southern California. The Newport Beach location in year 2009 used to be on 121 Agate Ave, in the heart of the Balboa Island. Our gallery from August 2008 describe in more detail how to approach the club from the alley between Agate Ave. and Pearl Ave, and how to park in this busy place.
