Alameda, 19.May.2002,
how we never made it to the Farallons... ..."It Never Rains In California"... Destination: Farallons Islands. However the look at the weather satellites was not encouraging: A large front was coming in. The only question was, how fast will it reach the Bay. But, since this is was presumably the very last day of the Jeanneau 52 yacht "Polonaise II" in the club, we were condemned to go sail her on this very day! The official model designation of this yacht is Sun Odyssey 52.2. As soon we left Ballena Bay and looked at the Bay toward Golden Gate it became obvious that we will not make it to the Farallons. Fog and low ceiling impacted the visibility. It would not be safe to navigate in fog along the busy entry channel to San Francisco, let alone we could not hope to see anything at the Farallon Islands. This was the first time that I took the impressive Canon lens 100-400mm L IS with me, and put Canon's "Image Stabilization" technology under test in adverse conditions. The result is incredible. Without this cutting edge stabilization technology I could not have hoped to obtain any sharp images with a 400mm lens under such circumstances. |
