Pyin U Lwin (Maymyo)

Also known as Maymyo - May Town - during British times, when it was a popular hill station thanks to the cool climate. Strangely the local taxis are mini stagecoaches.

Hi,

My family moved to Maymyo around 1956-57 and I started my school in Maymyo. That was in 1958 and I remembered the school name is Cusak High School.
But could not able to locate my old school whic was near railway station. No one can tell me about that school. If you can help me fi d some infor I shall be very much appreciated.

I left Maymyo in 1962.

I was just searching the internet for some pictures of Maymyo when I found this site.

My sister's & I visited Maymyo in February 2015 as part of a tour and we wanted to see where my grandparents lived and where our mother grew up. The "old house" picture is, I believe, the house they owned and lived in until 1942 and the retreat from Burma.

Also interested to hear about St Michael's School, our mother Phyllis Thomson, born 1914, attended that school as a girl.

Mum also married one of the KOYLI`s serving in the town -Albert Crossland.

my family went to maymyo in 1946 as my father was in the BAF (BURMA AUXILARY FORCE),my siblings (brother and sister) and I went to ST MICHAELS SCHOOL, the head mistress was originally a MRS DESANTOS,she eventually left and was replaced by a MRS WILTSHIRE.We rented a house owned by a miss HISLOP called MAURYA it was one of the houses on the fringe of the RIDES, it had asilver peacock onarment on the front of the house. We eventually got married quarters at ALEXANDER BARRACKS. Not long after however MAYMYO was captured by the KNDO (Karen National Defence Organisation) and was held for some months before being liberated by the government.We eventually flew down to RANGOON and came to UK.

My mother was born in Insein Rangoon but spent time in Maymyo where she too attended S Michael and All Saints school. Has anyone out there got a picture as I cannot visit Maymyo this year, just Rangoon. Mum was born 1931. We cannot trace the houses she lived in called Tony Cot and Sevenoaks.

Just saw someone's comment that their mother went to School in Maymyo and wonder which school it could have been. My mother went to boarding school in Maymyo and the school was St Michaels and all Angels

Hi, My mother was born in 1906, in India, and for a time went to a boarding school in Maymyo, which she said she loved. I wonder if you could tell me what school she might have attended. She also went to another school in Malmain? not sure if that's the right spelling. I am trying to piece her early life together, unfortunately Mum is no longer here, so I cannot ask her. Thankyou

I am trying to find information on my mother who was from MayMyo Burma born in 1912. Her maiden name was Fitzgeral until she married William Dolman who was in the KOYL'S. I think the name of Rose may be relevent.

I was from Maymyo too and left from there when I was 16.Since then I never had a chance to visit there again.Sometimes miss so much where I used to live the house on circular road near catholic churches and convents.Thank you very much for the photos.

I was born in Maymyo (Pyin U Lwin) in 1932. My family came over to India in December 1941 soon after Pearl Harbour. I revisited Maymyo in December 2006 with my wife and my son. The town is unchanged. We found our house, Ruby Cottage, not only intact but lovingly maintained by the present owner whose father had purchased it from my father after the war. He led us into the house. The house is just as it was when we left over sixty years ago. My mother used to say that (she was born in Maymyo and left it when she was over 30) always used to say that there is no better place then Maymyo. I can now understand why.

Hello Serena., my heart lurched as I saw your photos in the internet this afternoon. I was born in Thaton and brought up in Maymyo, where I lived till I was 28, and then came to Tettnang in South Germany. My sisters are in the US and 2 school friends here in Germany...Where do you live?...
