St. Joseph's Abbey - (St. Benedict) Louisiana

I began this gallery in the spring of 2005 when all the new foliage was sprouting on the trees.
The older, wooden structures shown here were built in the late 1800's and early 1900's and were used when the Abbey was a working farm.
There is much beauty and feeling of spirituality on the grounds of the Abbey and one can find serenity while visiting.

This Abby looks like a very tranquil place. Your images make it look like you would want to lose yourself here in contemplation. I am hoping that the flooding will not lead to too severe damage.

I am John Hornung, On May 8, 2008 I wrote a comment on your St. Joseph Abby website. My connent on a date is incorrect. I starts "In 1952 I watched ..."
Please change this to "On July 22, 1951 I watched ...."
This date was on the painting DeWitt did of me on the day I watched him paint in the church.

I just visited recently with some friends and a visitor from the Navajo Indian Reservation in Shiprock, NM. The visit was such a beautiful reminder of my conversion to Catholicism in 1988 when our church made a day trip to the beautiful Abbey and grounds. Thanks for a stroll down memory lane. M. LeBlanc

In 1952 I watched DeWitt teaching another artist while painting the image above the left side altar. My brothers and I were there for summer camp. DeWitt did a portrait of me, which I have. I was told by others that my image is the boy pulling a wagon in the painting above the church entrance. As thanks for the portrait, my mother purchased his painting of the angel appearing to a man in the desert. The wall size version is in the abbey dining room. I still admire his work. John Hornung

Beautiful photographs. We have a dear friend whom we have known for some 38 years now, residing here at St. Josephs' Abbey. We were friends way back in Navy days. We are very blessed to have visited this area, walked these same grounds, seen many of these same things, and worshipped God in this magnificant church. We felt such peace while walking these grounds. Thank you for a pictoral reminder of how beautiful this area is and how very special and lasting true friendship's are...

VERY well done. I spent some times there as an altar boy on picinics, on retreats in high school at St. John Vianney, visiting friends who went to school there as well. What a memory, and the photos are SO well done.

JM, I actually got to play the old Wicks organ in the mid 1980s. Tremendous privilege.

The picture showing the road over the Boguefalaya brought back the scene in 1955 when I entered the semianry. Those 3 years were the best, and your picturers are excellent.

The pictures are lovely. I attended the seminary there and then entered the noviate and took vows as a monk. I stayed for 7yrs. before leaving. I still go back frequently since my family lives within a mile of the Abbey and father is buried in their cemetary. Abbot Justin and I were in temporary vows(formation) at the same time. Thank you for sharing the pictures with us. I was living in New Orleans until this Hurricane Katrina changed all that.

I came across this gallery on my hunt for pictures of this abbey. I spent a lot of time there as a child (my father rebuilt the pipe organ in the 1970's), and it's wonderful to see photos that capture the feelings I had during my childhood summers. Thanks. JM

Beautiful gallery, Coleen. The abbot isn't the same person as the monk in your PAD, is he? (I can never keep straight all the titles, orders, institutions, jobs, etc. that seem to be associated with churches -- or religions in general. For example, are all monks members of a specific order? Can they live in Abbeys or just in monastarys? ... But I digress. Very nice photos, especially the indoor shots; they are so difficult to do well.
