Perilloux Place

The land has been in the Perilloux family since the 1800's. It was once a thriving sugarcane plantation and, before that an indigo plantation. The original plantation house of solid cypress, built in 1820, was destroyed in 1973 by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers during an emergency levee setback.
I am now the owner of the place and, hopefully, I and those who come after me will heed my father's words in 1977 not long before he died "never sell the land."

The Mississippi River is only 300 yards from the front door.

What a beautiful home you have and how wonderful that it has been kept in the family. Seems like a wonderful place to live except for when the Mississippi floods. It is particularly lovely in that unusual snow storm you had. Thanks for sharing these special photos...

My favorite galleries are the ones just like this—stories created with images and words that convey a sense of place and also a sense of time, and also a documentation of change. These portfolios are absolutely unique, whether they are about a your neighborhood in Louisiana, Silicon Valley, or a farming community in Ontario. They come from the heart. After going to festivals of Cajun music, and meeting folks like Dewy Balfa, seeing images like these makes me want to plan a trip! Thanks for these images that only a person who lives there can create. And thanks for the short descriptions. They help explain things—and increase a desire for more information, too. By the way, I noticed a kumquat tree growing in a pot on the front porch. (My wife has a recipe for some delicious kumquat jam.)

Great gallery, Coleen. Very historical, obviously, but retaining a 'today' sort of feel. Sometimes people forget we are living 'history' right now. You don't seem to have forgotten it by this shots
