Metairie Club Gardens After Hurricane Katrina

This area of Metairie survived the hurricane winds considerably well. It was a break in the 17th Street Canal levee that drains to Lake Pontchartrain that flooded the area after the hurricane. Water at heights of eight feet sat in this area and in the houses for two weeks.
For years the experts have been warning about "the big one" that was coming and the need for better levee protection. Congress vetoed bill after bill for aid for the levees in Jefferson Parish and New Orleans.
When I was in newspaper work I wrote many articles about "the big one" and when I was an editor my staff writers wrote millions of words about it. But, the public officials ignored the warnings. This is the price we are now paying.

While we were suffering the hell of fires seeing our country devastated by flames, from the other side of the Atlantic came the terrible news of the devastation of the Katrina. Terrible days we all lived this summer....this is our third summer of big fire devastation, the government should be better prepared, (but we are a small and poor country). I always thought a big rich country like the USA would be prepared for such a tragedy.Your photos are an amazing work. Greetings from Portugal.

Such unabashed and unnecessary devastation! The blame belongs soundly on the shoulders of LOCAL government and those that continued to elect such reprehensible, irresponsible, greedy monsters who'd rather line their own pockets than carry out the job they were elected to perform. Louisiana has historically been a hornet's nest of crooked politicians and I certainly hope not ONE of those currently in office is EVER re-elected to public office.

How horrible this must be. Not only the damamge but knowing that an ounce of prevention would have saved this beautiful estate. Hindsight is too late here. A true tradegy. Vote.

Coleen, I have so many friends whose homes have been destroyed. It is heartbreaking. Thanks for sharing these so that the rest of the world can see the our horror.

I know most of those homes, Ben has taken me through there and it is hard to look at and see what has happened. I hope the levee board is happy with the gambling boat and the harbor that they built with the money for the levees. This is the thing that needs to be told. Keep up the great work, you have my vote.

Oh, Coleen. This is you and your friends. How very, very heartbreaking. To me this makes it so real, and I know that photos cannot truly show the devastation. One bright note, the oaks live on...at least I hope that is true. Amazing.

yes they spoked about that scandal here in France after the hurricane ! It's always like that , you must have a desaster first ......
