The River Runs Wide, Swift and Deep-April 6, 2008

At Bonnet Carre' Spillway

The natural boundary of the Mississippi at this point is the tree line. The River rose two feet in the past 5 days and is at flood stage at the moment. River traffic is at a minimum because of the strong, swift current.
This is the time when barges get loose from their moorings and run rampant, creating havoc and endangering structures along the River.
I feel certain the Spillway locks will be opened in the next few days to prevent flooding in New Orleans.

Pretty impressive to see the melted snow from half the country all flowing past here. Scary too!

It is amazing that they wait as long as they do. History proves that you shouldn't go to the razor's edge when dealing with nature.

When I crossed the Mississippi by small ferry at Hickman KY last Spring I was amazed by the power of the current and the width. Nothing to fool with. Best wishes down there.

Great shot, I can't believe how wide the river is at that spot. No flood damage, please.
