Bucktown Fleet Finds a New Home

Lake Pontchartrain

Ousted by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers from their century old location on the 17th Street Canal, a small remaining group of the Bucktown fishing fleet has been relocated in a small inlet behind the Coast Guard Station (red roof) in Metairie. Since a few months after Katrina they docked at the Bonnabel Boat Launch, a public boat launch and their boats were crowded in danger of public abuse.
Floating piers from Lafreniere Park have been installed and in upcoming months improvements will be made to the dock.
This fishing fleet supplies hundreds of tons of shrimp and crabs to the New Orleans area and the United States each year.
