17th Street Canal at Lake Pontchartrain

Before Katrina restaurants on the water such as Sid Mar's and Bruning's were crowded with laughing families enjoying the bounty of the water--crabs, shrimp, fish. The restaurants are now sleeping on the floor of the lake, gulf, ocean somewhere. The beautiful Bruning house sat on the point.
The 17th Street Canal nearer to the Coast Guard station was the home of the Bucktown fishing fleet. They have all been banned from their once quaint home by the federal government and now seek refuge in another port. Because of this exodus many of them have given up their livelihood which had been in many of their families for at least six generations.
All that is left of the once famous and popular area is the lighted Coast Guard station left to guard the pelicans who have taken up residence on the pilings that are left.

I wish there was incentive for private industry to come into New Orleans to help rebuild. Our misguided federal government shows no promise domestically, or internationally for that matter.

The reminders are all around Coleen, it must be sickening to see it day after day.

No matter where you take it the sun set always makes things prettier.

This is so sad and I am truly sorry for all of those families that have lost so much, including lives. John said it well when he commented on Bush's spending and his lack of commitment to rebuilding the area.

I always think of you and your sadly neglected city, when I see Bush spending more of your money in Iraq. Obviously Katrina was not considered a significant threat to your way of life - strange! :-(

Beautifully sad picture, Coleen

What a shame that everything has had to change. Yet, the pelicans must be smiling!

I love how you created distance in this image, by the way the sky photographed. This is beautiful and gives a person so much to see. Very nice. V.
