Built in 1820 by French native Cazamie Bernard Mericq, St. Joseph house has eighteen-inch-thick, solid-brick walls and brick columns supporting the second floor indicating the West Indies style of architecture. The rest of the house is built of cypress.
Shortly after the Civil War, in about 1870, Joseph Waguespack, of German descent, bought the house and today it is preserved and beloved by his descendants. It is still a working sugar cane plantation.
It has recently been opened for tours on the Great River Road in Louisiana. It is located near Oak Alley Plantation, Laura Plantation and Felicity Plantation.
