This area in uptown New Orleans did not suffer the lingering three weeks of flood water as other parts of the City following Hurricane Katrina. It is nearer the Mississippi River and on high ground. It is an area that was built when the "Americans" did not wish to live in the Vieux Carre', the first and oldest part of the City. Water rushed in and rushed out within a few hours. The area appears to never have seen Katrina were it not for the fact that the streetcar line in front of this house still remains silent. The St. Charles Avenue line may begin running again in the beginning of 2007 as electrical equipment nearer Canal Street must be totally replaced.
Uptown New Orleans is thriving and on Sunday Audubon Park was a beehive of people jogging, walking their dogs, bicycling or playing sports. Quite unlike City Park which looked like total desolation when I drove through it after I left Audubon Park. All I could think of was "how sad, how very sad."
