Oh Say Can You See

Lakeview in New Orleans

Last evening a longtime friend of mine and longtime photographer for The Times Picayune, New Orleans' daily newspaper, begged police to shoot him. Recognizing his condition, they took him into custody and he is in a jail cell on suicide watch and doctor's care.
He stayed through Katrina and its aftermath getting front page photos for the world to see.
His home in Gentilly was totally destroyed in the floodwaters (caused by neglect of the Army Corps of Engineers) along with all his and his family's belongings and his insurance company refused to pay him anything. It all became too much.
He is in a jail cell because there are no more hospitals in New Orleans except for Touro hospital. All the others were flooded. There are only a few psychiatric beds in the entire metro area so my friend sleeps in a jail cell for his own safety.
No money has trickled down from the federal government to solve any of the problems of destruction such as infrastructure and health systems. Our faith in our government leaders is as tattered and torn as this flag flying in front of a flooded out house in Lakeview with the watermarks still on the frame.

It's disgusting.
Billions spent on destroying ( ah la Iraq, fghanistan Lebanon).
Nothing for the folks at home to renew.

What a devastating time your friend has had. I am amazed that his insurers would not pay out and that the army let his house be flooded. I do hope he recovers and is able to move on to a brighter and better life.

Well connected! So brutally honest and sad. I along with Bob voice a desire to join in the effort of bringing this to light. I cannot even watch network news anymore because of stories like this that are more than worthy of continued coverage yet never get a moment of recognition in the day and age of "pop news cycles". How sad a nation are we...

Bless you Coleen!

Who has the phone number to that local Govt, exposure will shed light an that will get the ball rolling, Send some picture, and help tell the story, to the national press. Give us some phone number for the state reps. That poor man needs a chace to get back on his feet. I'll spend a dime, Contact the local VFW and they will dispose of the Flag. The only way we keep America worth a new Flag is by being active. Rattle some bars.By the way no home owners insurance in America is covered by flood insurance, that is a seperate policy to buy if you live in an area that could flood, it is a policy,. I would buy it if I lived below sealevel, I understand it is very affordable.

Back to the Local,State and Federal Govt, keep up the exposure, they knew about the levee problems and should, assist places other than the French Qtr.

How sad.

rhetorical : What happened to the Billions and Billions of Money given to Red Cross and Salvation Army and everyother charity. Is there any class action suite against the insurance company for fraud and deceit. Is there atleast a blog site that list the Insurance companies that are not or will not pay? It is not the governments job to build him a new house. It was and is the govenments job to maintain the infrastructure and safety of its people. It failed on both accounts.

I am glad your freind was recognized by the police.
No telling what would have happened if he was not.
There is a tattered flag flying on Shibumi. http://www.pbase.com/royalld/image/55937265
It will be replaced when I feel good about this government again.

More sad details, Coleen. The frustration must be unbearable at times. I wish your friend well.

Disturbing narrative and image. The political world is a broken promise.
