Joy and Sorrow

New Orleans

I drive through the neighborhoods of New Orleans at least once a week photographing the progress or lack of progress following Hurricane Katrina.
The neighbors put this sign up in a yard on Robert E. Lee Boulevard. She has lived in New Orleans for 64 years and in this neighborhood for 35 years. When I stopped to take the photo I spoke to some of them who were repairing their homes, hauling out debris or cleaning their yards. It is slow progress but it is progress.
This is very typical of the plight of thousands. One never thought the levees would break and insurance companies told homeowners in certain areas "you do not need flood insurance." A hard lesson to learn.
I can only imagine what it is like to be in the autumn or winter of your life and wanting to come back home.

A melancholy image. A touching image, and it's nice to see that people are coming together to help one another. Hopefully Mary makes it home soon... GMV

Heartbreaking Coleen! Though also, filled with such caring and support from her neighbors! I pray she makes it home!

Tough, so very tough.

This just crushes me :( It is too sad. Even worse that it's just one of thousands.

For Neal Nye, we also spend millions on people in the New Orleans area that DON'T WANT TO WORK FOR A LIVING. Mre. Mary is the one that deserves help and can not get it. I just hope Neal reads this, I'm in the New Orleans area and can't wait to get out of an area that can't help itself.

Heart-breaking! Surely such an insurance 'Act of God' is covered by Government compensation?

Nice find Coleen it is nice to see people come together for a common cause such as this.

I find it so shameful that we can't take care of people like this in our society. We can spend billions on a useless war, but...oh, never mind.

Tragic but a great shot
