Suspended in Time

On the afternoon of August 26, 2005, eighth grade boys attended class in this room. They were dismissed for the weekend. On the early morning of August 29 Hurricane Katrina struck followed by breaks in the levee of the Industrial Canal which brought billions of gallons of water into this part of New Orleans. Families lost their homes, this entire area is still vacant. The boys families moved to other cities and states and to other jobs.
And, life as we knew it--life as the young men of Holy Cross knew it--exists no more in New Orleans.

I had homeroom here in my sophomore year (1988-89). This room also served as the Spanish class. I walked through this room when I visited campus on Christmas Eve 2006 and was surprised to see they turned the old Spanish language lab into the Louisiana History class.

The chalkboard, like many in the building, had messages of hope, prayers and thanks from alumni, military who came with the storm and students who had apparently come home to New Orleans and wanted to see how their school fared.

I left a few messages on some chalkboards too, mostly lines from our alma mater or fight song, such as "Proudly from they towers, gleams the gold and blue," "And our hearts forever, praise thy glorious name" or "Shake down the thunder."

These classrooms on the second and third floors are just as the students left them before the storm. The chalkboards still had homework assignments. Lockers were left open, filled with books, notebooks and school jackets. Time stands still at HC
