Slave Cabins at Evergreen Plantation - Ghosts of the Past

Evergreen Plantation in Wallace, Louisiana

History. Evergreen still maintains 22 of these buildings for historical data, 11 on each side of an allee' of live oaks. Although there were once thousands of these in the United States, very few remain.
All southern states had slavery and Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, too. Although people prefer to label it as only in southern United States it was just as prevalent in several of the northern states.

When I was in Baton Rouge in the mid 60's there were lots of people living in houses similar to these. I remember going to one and being able to see the ground through the cracks in the floor.

I think it's wonderful these were preserved for historic purposes. I like the dark exposure you chose for this image.

Is there a corner post missing in that first cabin? If so I hope someone repairs it as it would be a shame to lose it over the lack of a four by four. Nice POV Coleen! Love the look of these old trees!

Superb, Coleen. The image and the history.

The oaks bear silent witness to the dead, slave and slave owner, good and bad, man and woman, who once walked under their canopy. One day they will bear witness of us too.
