People think it is always Mardi Gras in New Orleans. NOT. Carnival season begins on Twelfth Night, January 6 and ends at midnight on Mardi Gras, this year being February 21. And, parades begin this weekend through Mardi Gras.
The "flambeau" lights the way for the Parade and is a throwback to the 1800's when there were no street lights. Only a few of the Krewes have the flambeau now and it is much liked by the crowds.
The torches are fueled with, I don't know what. Years ago they were fueled with kerosene. They fit in a holder on a belt around the carrier's waist. It is amazing how they walk the 10 mile route with these and dancing and picking up money all the way.
