Leah Chase and Dooky Chase IV

New Orleans

Leah Chase is one of New Orleans' most popular restauranteurs. She and her husband, Dooky Chase II, opened the first restaurant for African Americans in New Orleans before racial integration. She entertained almost every president since Eisenhower in her restaurant and scolded President Obama for putting extra pepper in her gumbo. She has been very generous to numerous fundraisers in the city and is a huge supporter of the New Orleans Museum of Art. She calls her style of cooking "Creole". Now in her 80's she can still be seen everyday stirring the pots in her restaurant and visiting with the patrons at their tables.
