St. Alphonsus-the Church of the Irish

Constance Street in New Orleans

Built in 1850, this building is no longer a church. It is used as a cultural center and on this day held an exhibit of artistic Christmas creche' from various countries.
The Church was built in the Irish Channel of New Orleans especially for the Irish who wanted to hear their sermons spoken in their native tongue. The Church was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Directly across the street from St. Alphonsus stands St. Mary's Assumption Church which was built for the German immigrants who wanted sermons in their native tongue.
Until this time, all churches in New Orleans offered Mass with sermons in either French or English.

Beautiful photo Coleen and thanks for the history. I've been in both churches and had no idea of their origins.

Beautiful church. As a nativity collector I would love to see the creche exhibit.

Beautiful church, glad to see though it does not serve the diocese, it has been preserved. Even though we're Irish, don't remember ever going there as a youngster.

A marvelous image of this wonderful structure. The lighting must have been very difficult. So well done!

Beautifully done, Coleen. It good this has survived. Too bad it isn't an active church, there could be some beautiful weddings in there.

It's very beautiful. Reminds me of the church in the old neighborhood I grew up in - it has similar colors and the altar set up is the same.

This is a gorgeous church and the golden light really brings out its beauty. The POV really shows it's size too. I really miss these ornate old churches.

What a lovely old church Coleen, lovely to see the stained glass windows still intact & the lovely painted ceiling... you'll need a lot of fund-raisers to reach that target though!
