Tezcuco Ruins

Burnisde, Louisiana

This is what remains of a once beautiful house. It was lovingly restored in 1982 by Louisiana Brigadier General and Mrs. O. J. Daigle.
It was a large, white raised cottage with beautiful front and side galleries. The one story, frame Greek Revival House was built for Benjamin Tureaud in 1855. Tureaud was the grandson of Emanuel Bringier who owned many plantations in the area. The grape and vine ironwork on the front and side gallieries distinguished it from most cottages in the area.
A fire in the middle of the night destroyed it in 2002.
General Daigle died in April, 2010. His daughter, Debra Daigle Mayhew, along with her husband, Zeb, is now the steward of Oak Alley Plantation, across the Mississippi River from Tezcuco.
One day I'll find my box of film photos I took of Tezcuco in the 198o's and post with this.

It is almost like a tombstone in a cemetery. How very sad......

...another piece of fading history. Beautiful grounds.

We remember that, a great plantation home was lost in that fire. Remains only hint of what once was

The arch of tree branches frames this so nicely. One wonders how a fire like that could get started. What a tragedy.

I'm rewatching Ken Burn's Civil War. This looks like the remains of Sherman's march to the sea.

Lovely to look through those beautiful trees and see the ruins Coleen, a lovely image & beautiful setting for the old home before the decay set in.

Heartbreaking. Makes me feel ill to see it burned up like that. I might have a photo of Tezcuco in my 1980a River Road photo collection too. The trees and grounds still look amazing, especially in contrast to the ruins behind. Thank you for sharing and I hope you do find and post a before photo.
