Built in the early 1800's by Henry Howard (the same man who designed Nottoway Plantation in White Castle and the Henry Howard House in New Orleans) for the Pugh Family, this house raised many people who became prominent, productive citizens. There were judges, soldiers and even a lady who helped found the Louisiana SPCA. The cemetery, enclosed by a beauiful iron fence and gates, sits behind the house under a massive, ancient oak. The tombstones have beautiful engravings and sayings on them.
On the marker of the resting place of the lady who helped the animals reads:
In recognition of her love for God's dumb creatures
The Louisiana State S. P. C. A places this slad on the grave of its benefactress
Charlotte Reid Beattie
1883-1926
Daughter of Taylor Beattie and
Frances Estelle Pugh
"He prayeth best who loveth best
All things both great and small"
The house was lovingly restored by Naomi Marshall in the latter part of the 1900's and her son, Keith and his wife, Millie, are now the stewards of the place.
