Sunrise on the Gulf of Mexico

Off the coast of Grand Isle, Louisiana

This photo was taken in the winter time. You can see pelicans flying over the water and the silhouette of an oil rig in the distance.
The oil gush came at a very inopportune time; not that there is ever a good time. In the late spring and early summer, the pelicans are nesting on the outerbanks and sea critters are spawning and laying their eggs. This gush would not have been quite so devastating to wildlife, particularly the pelicans, had it been the end of summer or in the winter when they were not instinctively clinging to protecting their nests and their babies.
It would always have been bad for the oyster beds and the fishing industry.
WHAT A MESS.

Beautiful image Coleen. Presently, a catastrophe indeed.

A beautiful image of the gulf before the catastrophe.

The weather channel has billboards between forecasts, DISASTER IN THE GULF, where they talk about how bad it is. We will never see the cleanup of this in our lifetime.
I thought that was an oil rig in the background!

Beautiful image, Coleen. Such a sad ongoing story that will be affecting the whole country for quite some time.

It is such a sad situation with no easy clean up.
Beautiful morning sky Coleen.

Yes, it is a crisis and I don't see it getting any better yet. Just makes me sick.

Yes, I found myself weeping yesterday when I saw the picture of the turtles being burned alive!

This spill has created a giant problem for the gulf region in more ways than one. Wish I could "wave a magic wand" and fix it all for all the folks and critters down there :-(

I know which I'd prefer to see in that view.
