Imagine this beautiful bird with oil covering its wings and unable to fly.
An explosion of a British Petroleum oil well eight days ago in the Gulf of Mexico some 50 miles off the Louisiana Coast is a major disaster. Some 150 workers were rescued and 11 men have never been found.
The well is leaking an estimated 5,000 barrels a day into the Gulf some 5,000 feet below the surface. The oil in the Gulf is now 10 miles off the Louisiana and Mississippi shores and with a southeast wind and a tide one foot higher than normal, the results will be devastating.
The pelicans are nesting on the ground as well as some species of ducks and the oil will kill them. Our fish, shrimp and oyster estuaries will be ruined and the rest of the nation will wonder why they cannot reap our bountiful harvest of the seafood.
This is the time of year when songbirds and other migrating birds arrive on our coast to rest on their travels as well.
Such a monumental disaster that will go on for years. Louisiana supplies almost half of the nation's fuel. Today I ask "IS IT WORTH IT?" to see the suffering that will occur with our wildlife and our seafood industry, and people's livelihoods.
