The USS New York
13 October 2009 Coleen Perilloux Landry

The USS New York

On a foggy morning sailors and Marines line the deck of the USS New York as it sails on its maiden voyage from the shipyard where it was built in Avondale, Louisiana. The ship contains 7 1/2 tons of steel from the twin towers of the World Trade Center and is named in memory of the over 3,000 persons who lost their lives in the 9/11 terrorists attack. The two stacks resemble the twin towers.
It will be based in Norfolk, Virginia and when needed in battle, will carry Marine landing crafts and aircrafts.
Thousands of Louisiana residents lined the levees and the banks of the Mississippi River waving American flags as a tribute.

Maybe not as dramatic as the one in the sunshine, but more clearly showing the details, especially the two towers. A fine shot!

Fabulous!! thanks for posting this. Here's some information about this ship, a San Antonio class LPD (amphibious transport dock). My ex was an amphib sailor and served aboard the USS Coronado LPD 11 (now out of commission).
