Jefferson College in St. James Parish

Convent, Louisiana - St. James Parish

Note the Thomas Jefferson style of architecture.
In the early 19th century Jefferson College was begun as a private school for sons of plantation owners. Between the Civil War (1865) and the Great Depression in the 1920's, the Marist Fathers conducted the college as a Catholic School. The property was sold to the Jesuits in 1931.
Up the road a piece there was a Catholic boarding school for girls known as "the Convent". Thus, the town became known as Convent and remains to this day. The girls school has since been destroyed.
My paternal grandfather attended this college. He was born in 1840.
