Bald Eagles in Louisiana

For so long, the eagle was almost extinct in Louisiana. However, in the past few years, we are finding more and more nests which means that people are protecting them and they have found an environment that they like minus DDT. They make their nests in the very tops of trees, usually cypress and live oak in southeast Louisiana. Some of the nests are 40-60 feet off the ground. The nest is very large and made of heavy sticks and moss and the size of an automobile. Once the eggs are laid in November, the eagles stay with the nest and the eaglets until they can fly well, usually until the beginning of summer.
This gallery is mostly made up of a pair of eagles that I have followed since 2009. However, I have added photos of a younger pair who are in their third year of nesting (since 2011.) And, some of the "babies" are returning to the region and in a couple of years will probably bring a mate and have nests of their own.
LATEST PHOTOS ARE AT END OF THE GALLERY. Click on small image for full page and scroll down and read underneath photo.
