Ala Moana (the path to the sea) beach park is the place for locals while Waikiki is for tourists.
It was orginally part of the Honolulu garbage dump in the early part of the last century.
The park and beach complex was dedicated by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1934.
Sand for the beach was brought from Yokohama Bay in Wai'anae.
