The Grandeur of It All . . .




Ten days and nine nights floating the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. Put in at Lee's Ferry, take out 226 river miles later at Diamond Creek.
With the incomparable Gary Ladd as our workshop leader and the incredible guides and crew from Arizona River Adventures (AZRA) at the helm, a cast of crazy strangers bonded into a tight knit community over ten hot, dry, wet, cold, silty, dirty, dusty, & hilarious days.
Exquisite light, extraordinary side canyons, waterfalls, adrenaline-pumping rapids, gorgeous rocks of all sizes and colors, literally geology writ large brought to life in the myriad photo opportunities everywhere you turned.
I can't begin to put in words how it all looked, felt, tasted, sounded, smelled; how it resonated in the hearts of everyone on the trip. You'll just have to go someday yourself to truly understand.

Fabulous pictures of an extraordinary trip. I was with Ralph Lee Hopkins last week in Santa Fe, he leads the AzRA May Grand Canyon trip, and he said that the raft trip really changes your life and it takes him at least a month to reenter the everyday world. After about 20 backpacking trips into the Canyon, and two rafting trips, I thoroughly enjoyed your very well composed photos. And I know exactly the feelings you have for this most awesome and humbling of places. Thank you for sharing these great memories.

Derek! these are terrific! What an amazing adventure we had... of these photos the one that strikes me most is the kitchenware in the "washing machine".. i mean, mud.

AzRA's a great outfit, I took a 14-day hybrid trip a couple years ago. One of the special things of a trip like this is the comraderie you feel with everyone else on the trip. Great photos, Derek. You've captured the experience wonderfully.

What Brian said and definitely falls under the "you had to be there" heading. Truly appears that grandeur is an appropriate word. Good work Derek; I'm sure it wasn't easy to get into position to get casual smile captures on the river. g
