I Flew Through THAT???...

Gulp!!! This is what its all about. Here is a close-up of the eyewall of Super Typhoon Cecil, somewhere east of the Philippine Islands in August of 1982. I didn't write down much about this storm, but I do remember that it was a strong one. I was a student, flying with an experienced instructor navigator and this was one of my first missions into a typhoon. Here I was, just a kid from Ohio, who found himself on the other side of the world, looking at that! I must admit that during this I had second thoughts about my choice of careers! We are in the eye, looking out the right side of the plane. In the foreground, you can see the center. The dark area is the actual eyewall. It's so dark because the heavy rain inside it is blocking all the light from coming through. It really is a solid wall of wind and rain. Notice how high it goes (we are about 7000-8000 feet up). Also notice how close the center is to the eyewall. Yep, this is one mean storm!
