Ancient Echoes - This exhibition I did with Henriette Ponte, a potter, during October of 2016.
The echoes of ancient traditions that still manifest themselves today, inspire the work of Henriette Ponte, a potter, and Bill Scull, a photographer in this joint show. Join us for the Artists’ Reception Friday, October 7th from 5 to 8 PM.
We both are itinerant travelers, cultural voyeurs whose curiosities and imaginations are engaged by ancient traditions that still manifest themselves in plain sight, through architecture, artifacts, dress or rituals. They are the echoes of deeply cherished cultures past or passing. Both artists’ draw on these echoes in their work.
“My artwork derives from my personal and professional background: my upbringing and residence in various places around the world (such as Romania, Israel, China and recently California), my professional background as Socio-Anthropologist, and the rich Jewish heritage that I'm part of,” said Henriette Ponte. “I enjoy exploring ancient and traditional forms and motifs - such as pomegranates and totems - through an extensive usage of vivid colors and textures that reflects my Mediterranean background. I mainly use hand building techniques, and every piece I create is unique and one of a kind.”
“I love capturing the mystery of people against their cultures' backdrop,” said Bill Scull. “My work often focuses on people: the wrinkles, lines or expressions that have been written into a face; the relationship of one to another; the clutter, artifacts or rituals that have built up around the place someone has worked or lived for a lifetime; or the care taken arranging wares at the market, clothes on the line, shoes at the door or tools on the bench.”
