Summer Palace Statue - Father and Son?

Does the large lion in this shot represent something different then the father lion playing with his offspring? I could see this statue being commissioned to represent the emperor's power over his people, China's power over the world around it, or something of a similar theme. Similar statues were seen in other historical sites throughout Beijing and Xi'an.
