Gila Bend

..about 20 miles NW of Gila Bend, Arizona, is an ancient petroglyph site. The petroglyphs, or rock graffiti, dates back to as old as 7500 BC to 1450 AD. The site has also been a cross-roads for many other historical parties. In the fall of 1775, Juan Bautista de Anza led a group of Spanish colonizers from Tucson to San Francisco, they are said to have camped nearby this site. In 1846, the Mormon Battalion camped nearby on their way to help fight in the Mexico-US War. In 1851, the Oatman party was massacred only about 10 miles to the west of here near the Gila River. From 1858 to 1861, the Butterfield Stage route passed nearby here, carrying mail from St. Louis to San Francisco. Lastly, from the late 1800's to the early 1900's, other settlers signed their names here...hey there were no regulations back then (times were good back then:). A lot of history at this site for sure...
