A visit up to the B-24J Liberator S/N 42-50890 crash site located north of Flagstaff, Arizona. The crash site is located on the west side of Mt Humphrey at 11,300 ft. It's location is somewhat elusive as there are multiple talus fields on this flank of the mountain. The B-24 was enroute from Bakersfield, California to Albuquerque, New Mexico when it crashed on Sept, 15 1944 around 3am. The accident report suggests pilot error as the plane was 15 miles too far north of the planned flight route. According to the report there were no signs of airplane malfunction and all 4 engines were delivering power at impact. The moon was 27 days old so it wouldn't have been much help illuminating ground features. In all 8 servicemen perished here.

Debris is scattered for about 1/4 mile up the talus field. I was able to locate what may have been the impact site as there appears to be large crater and some of the rocks around it are cracked. Molten aluminum is found everywhere. The plane is in remarkable condition, a testament to how well we built things during this era.
