love the color and love the format. I feel the rectangle give more sense of area and envoriment. I like the long lines. it drawn the attention (energy) into her face

IMHO, if it was square there would be no background at all and it would look like an ID photo. I'm not real crazy about ID photos. Besides that, it's an ad photo layout. The space to the left is for a headline, slogan or text block.. The lines in the wood would loose their purpose as pointers and for perspective if they were cut off. The rich color of the wood is to balance and support her skin tones, and to add warmth to the feeling of the photo. The negative space to the left of her head balances and supports the space occupied by her head.
