"Ice Storm over Geneva, Switzerland"

After a conjunction of intense cold (-8 to -12 degrees Centigrade), plus very strong winds, blowing at over 100 kmh (70 mph), the waves got so harsh that they passed over the dikes and the droplets immediatly froze everything they touched !

NOTE #1 ! After several people asking if these photos were shot on a place named "Lake Geneva" in Wisconsin, USA, i certify that it is NOT ! I was born in Geneva, Switzerland, and still live there ! I guess the "original" city of Geneva, Switzerland, allready existed centuries before America was even discovered...

NOTE #2 ! Many people mentionned a "PowerPoint presentation" they saw... I just want to make clear that it hasn't got anything to do with me, nor that any of my images were used in it... Some other photographer did it, using his own photographs !

All I can say is that I lived 60+ years in Geneva, Switzerland, and NEVER seen such a thing ! ...although I remember having seen several times the lakesides frozen, and even the lake itself partly iced, in 1956 (as I went ice-skating on it !).

BUT, this phenomenon od strong winds -in the right direction- PLUS very low temperature seems to be rather rare !

I am curious about the frequency with which ice storms as severe as this one occur.
Could someone inform me on how often this type severe weather occurs? I live outside of Washington, D.C. in USA and am amazed by what I have seen!

One of the messages above asks how people get into the ice encrusted cars. I guess that people that live in this area, if icing like this happens every year, install remote starters in their cars. They'd leave the heater and defrosters on high when exiting and start the car remotely in the morning and let it run for a half hour before leaving the house. Run quickly from warm house to (hopefully) defrosted car. GREAT PICTURES!

Extraordinary pictures--walking over the ice to get them must have been interesting. In Western New York (USA), we get many weather-related surprises, and are nationally known here as being a place where few want to live. However, we have, in my memory, never been encased in 5 inches of ice--8 feet of snow, perhaps, but we have always been able to access our cars. Lake Geneva, as you photographed it, looked like a wonderland. Thank you for the photos.

To address a comment made by Michael Melahouris, you would do well not to lump all Americans as demographically ( the correct spelling,by the way) challenged. There is more than one Lake Geneva in the world. Obviously anyone can, as you say, have their head up their arse.

I've never been in or around an ice storm before. I have bee in temps as low as 20 below zero Fahrenheit, but no wind at the time. This is quite an impressive series of images. You really captured the storm well.

Geneva is a beautiful city. I visited with my family 2 weeks ago, and of all the places we saw in Switzerland, Geneva was certainly our pick. Such a mix of Internationalism and old world quaintness.

How a wonderful event... Except these all unfortunate damages of course. I've received a few of similar pictures (similar - it means similar event has been captured..) some time ago, but there were cherry (but not sure in 100% abut its kind)trees with cherry fruits on them, so I guess that was happened in completely different place (Japan?) in The World. Anyway, beautiful gallery. Best Regards.

I received a URL from a friend directing me to the photos you mention and decided to search for more pictures. I then found your page and am AWEstruck by how beautiful your photos are! The photos of the pruned trees are particularly cool and so 'surrealistic'! I love all of them. But HOW on earth did people manage to free their cars? They must have needed BLOW torches to get the ice off them. Thank you for posting these wonderful images Jean-Pierre. They just remind me once again of the power and wonderment of God's creation!

Back in 1956 I was living in Geneva and working at the World Health Organisation, and we had a freeze like this one, though perhaps not quite so severe. When I forst saw the pictures of this, I was puzzled. It looked much worse than the 1998 ice storm that hit Quebec, Vermont, and New York, but the lake water was not frozen! Now I understand. As the Montrealer below said, it was not a true ice storm. That also explains things like the tree with ice on the lower limbs, but not the upper ones. I recall that during the 1998 ice storm the temperatures were not particularly low (although obviously below freezing), which is part of why it was what it was, instead of snow.

These are amazing pictures indeed!

But I must point out that it is not technically an ice storm. Amazing as the result are, it is merely water being blown by stong winds on cold surfaces, only the area close to the waterline must have been affected. True ice storms occur when a layer a warm air sits on a layer of cold air, instead of snow you get rain wich hits the cold ground and freezes instantly.

We had a catastrophic ice storm in Montréal, Canada in 1998 wich left thousands of people without electricity for weeks in the cold winter. The damages were widespread and dozens of power pylons collapsed.

I saw some spectacular things that nature can do with ice and snow while I was living in the mountains and in Germany as a guest of the United States Army, but these are gorgeous, even the pictures of the "collateral damage!"

After receiving a PowerPoint presentation showing some of those pics, I had to do a little more research. Amazing! I have lived in Minnesota all my life, so I've seen my fair share of ice dams and other bad weather, but this beats anything I've seen before!

Absoutely beautiful. I live in Canada and have had similar experiences. While it can being very damaging the ice also makes for a very beautiful scene. I was in Switzerland in 2003. It is a very beautiful country. Thanks for sharing your photos.

Truly impressive! We get ice storms here in Minnesota, but nothing on that scale. Of course, we also can get winter temperatures in the -25 to -30 C range. And as a minor correction to a previous post, hurricane force winds are 74+ MPH, not 64.

I lived in Geneva last year, and I even remember that day! The air was so cold that it was hard to breathe. Geneva was breath-taking, even in the weather so cold.

Oops! It was 70 mph not 60 so it was not "close to" hurricame force winds, it definitely was hurricane force winds. Hurricane force winds start at 64 mph.

My impression from reading posts here is that some are "oo-ing" and ah-ing" over how cold it was. The -8 to -12 degress Celsius/Centigrade is equal to about 17 to 8 degrees Farenheit.

I'm sitting in Dayton, Ohio (USA), a city certainly not known for being cold, and it is 8 degrees Farenheit (-13 degrees Celsius) at the moment. It's certainly cold, but I didn't even bother with putting on my gloves or zipping my coat to get from my car to the store. Granted, I was not out very long, but it's not THAT cold. So, in my opinion, the big thing here is not at all how cold it got, but the wind speed! 60 mph (100 kmh) is close to hurricane force winds!!

I once interviewed a captain in the Coast Guard who told me about a Coast Guard ship on Lake Erie that capsized and sunk after becoming top-heavy from freezing spray (large waves crashed against the ship in high winds).

Hi, I got an email fwith some of these pictures and like Tiffany didn't believe it was true until I did some research and found this.. HOLY CRAP. I am in so much shock that I don't really know what to say... This is crazy... it's crazy to me that somewhere actually gets -12 degrees along with 70mph winds I know they both happen but crap... at the same time... were lots of people killed? I want to talk to someone that lives there! I grew up near Lake Geneva, partied there often when in high school. I've lived in Florida now for ten years. This is why! I brought my husband, a native Floridian, home to Wisconsin for Christmas 2000 and it was 17 degrees below zero on Christmas morning. He never wants to go back in the winter. Of course, the good news for you guys is the ice melts and all is well. We went through Hurricane Charley last year, and I'll take a winter storm over a hurricane any day!

These pictures are so much better than the Ford convertible commercial that was shown so many times during the Super Bowl. Live in Plano, TX which is 20 miles N of Dallas (I'm not a Dallas Cowboy fan, a fan of Dan Marino former QB of Miami Dolphins) and yes it does snow here. Had snow Valentines Day 2004 (made a snowman in front yard), Wed before Christmas 2004 and a dusting of snow Jan 2005 & Feb 2005.

I was going to call off sick at work when we had our snowstorm in New Jersey, but after seeing these pictures, I was glad we only had a few inches of snow!!! Great pictures! Unbelievable. Surrealistic in the extreme. I love the trees in mid-breeze. It all just seems so other-worldly and ethereal. I saw some of the cars looked so heavy from all the ice that it appeared their tires had gone flat under the weight of it. I despise ice storms. I grew up in a place where it just never happens. But now I live in the North East and ice storms, though beautiful, are without a doubt one of the most treacherous of Mother Natures impressive arsenal. Outrageously haunting photographs, definitely worthy of any gallery, anywhere. Excellent work.

Unbelievable and once in a lifetime photos. I went through a severe icestorm in Ottawa, Ontario about 6 years ago and it devastated the forests and it took ages to restore power lines that were downed (and people were without hydro for up to four weeks) so I realize how devastating this kind of phenomenon can be. You've captured it in true documentarian style. These images are really impressive.

Hi Peter ! the "Jet d'eau" DOES run thru the whole year now, but when the wind blows too hard, they cut it down... Pity as it would have been nice to see a 130 meters high ice-cream !

This is incredible! I've seen ice storms from freezing rain, but never from freezing lake waves, with such a great volume. Too bad the Jet d’Eau doesn't run in the winter! (;-)

Incredible and very surreal looking series. Some stunning images of a very rare nature event I think, I never saw something similar in my life, would have loved to be there. Very good work with your S2! This series deserve a vote so that more people could enjoy this wonderful series.
