Oasis in Lava Field

Galapagos: Isabela

On Isabela, interspersed in the pahoehoe lava field, there are many islands of life. These green spaces are host to an amazing variety of plant and animal life.

This is the view of the first one we encoutered where I caught an egret and some land locked fish. The fish enter from the ocean through small fissures, then grow too large to escape again. They also travel from pond to pond using lava tubes as their means of transit.

The volcano in the background is Cerro Azul or "Blue Hill" in English. This is the classic sheild volcano. The last recorded activity from Cerro Azul was in 2008 when it created a 10km lava flow to the Southeast (opposite side from this photo).
