[updated Jan-01-2015]
Driving to Alaska from New Jersey by car was the final chapter of my USA Road Trip which began in 2004. In 2004 my 17 year old son, my 2 year old Chocolate Labrador Retriever Sasha and I traveled 24 thousand miles in 73 days and saw and photographed all 48 of the lower United States of America. On August 9, 2010 my Chocolate Labrador Retriever, sasha, and I completed the journey when we arrived in Alaska by car on August 18, 2010. We drove throughout Alaska in the same Toyota RAV4 and went to such places as the North Pole, Fairbanks, Prudhoe Bay at the Arctic Ocean where the Alaska Pipeline begins, Denali National Park, Mt. McKinley, Wasilla, Anchorage, Haines, Seward, Homer, the Kenai Peninsula, Valdez (the end of the Alaska pipeline) and everywhere in between. Unfortunately, on April 19, 2011, while driving back home to New Jersey I fell asleep behind the wheel about 350 miles outside of Anchorage and my car went off the road into a ditch and came back up onto the road and rolled over. I escaped from the car through the front window but not without broken ribs and a deflated lung, Sasha got out as well and I found her eating from an ejected Chef Boyardee Ravioli can that was part of our provisions. Our belongings were completely strewn all over the road and ditch as the car-top carrier broke open. Within about 30 minutes someone showed up and called for help. I had to be flown by helicopter back to the trauma hospital in Anchorage for my injuries. Fortunately, a medic on scene offered to watch sasha because she couldn't come aboard the helicopter. Several days later sasha hitched a ride back to Anchorage where she stayed in a Kennel until I was released from the hospital (she has a cute face and is very resourceful). The doctors would not permit me to fly back until the end of May because of my injuries. Now I am ready to tell our story through photographs of our adventure in Alaska, "The Last Frontier".
