Mating Tiger Snakes

Yarra River, Melbourne

One weekend in mid-January 2008 just asI was heading back to the carpark I glanced over one of the small footbridges and saw these; a pair of tiger snakes that appeared to be mating. They blended in very well with their surroundings and I'm sure to most people they went unnoticed. The tracks along the Yarra are usually busy with walkers and cyclists. It was an overcast morning and they just seemd to enjoy lying out in the open. One of them eventually moved off while the other continued to lie there for another 5 minutes before seeking cover when it started to sprinkle. It's amazing how they just dissapeared into the grass and rocks basically just right under where they were lying. What had been a good morning had just become a great morning.......how lucky to see and photograph a pair of snakes mating in the wild......and in the heart of a capital city!
