Field Trip Photography Workshops

Yvonne Powell and I teamed up in 2011 to offer an on-location photography workshop. Our inaugural workshop was held November 6 - 10, 2011 in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, right in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The workshop sold out completely within 48 hours of the announcement and soon had a long waiting list. By any measure, the workshop was a huge success. For more details about the workshop and to see participant images from the workshop, click on the thumbnail for the specific Workshop Gallery below. Participant Comments:
As novice photographers we could not have found a better workshop. The accommodations, teaching sessions, and careful attention to all the logistics were exceptional. We were very impressed with the in-the-field photo spots chosen by our instructors and their ability to make quick changes in our itinerary to adjust for inclement weather. Jim and Yvonne’s passion for teaching, knowledge base, and one-on-one attention in the field was the cap stone in making this a great learning experience and most of all fun! Roger & Griselda

I was forced to shoot outside of my comfort zone. The weather is just something you learn to deal with and prepare for. Thank you for not letting us wimp out because part of the learning curve of photography is to make the best out of the conditions and lighting that is available at the time of the shoot. You and Yvonne were ALWAYS there for us. I could not have asked for more thoughtful and caring instructors who gave us space to experiment but were on hand to help create what we saw in our minds. ~ Bonnie

This workshop was the most fun I have had in ages. I received valuable instruction and practice. I learned how to use neutral density filters, shoot sun star-burst, and do vertical panning. I also learned how to use new HDR software and received wonderful feedback to improve my composition. I appreciate the individual instruction on my Lightroom file problems. You are both so patient, knowledgeable, and kind instructors/guides. I loved getting to take pictures in so many wonderful locations. It was so evident that you were there to help us. I couldn't believe you didn't even get your camera out. Words just don't adequately express how grateful I am to have had this opportunity. I can't wait for the next workshop. ~ Lana
