Indoors Event Photography presents certain challenges for the photographer. It is desirable to get as much separation of your subjects from the background, that is often busy with activity and is distracting in your images. For this shoot, I used the Canon Speedlite 550EX flash in a special setting: High-Speed Sync (FP Flash). The advantages of FP Flash are: obtain better background blur with a larger aperture, create a catchlight in the subject's eyes, and soften shadows on the subject's face, and get a darker background in softer ambient lighting. For this exercise, I selected aperture priority, f 5, using the Kit Lens. I was overall pleased with the effect. The exposures/histograms in the originals suggested that I was underexposing the shots, with the peak of the histogram falling decidedly to the left of center. However, I was getting a nice thin line of data all the way to the right of the histogram. When I look at these images on my home computer, they appear to be about 1/3 to 2/3 stop underexposed, so next time I will add +2/3 stop FEC. The images you see in this gallery have been adjusted in PS for levels to correct the slight underexposure. Additionally, each image was sharpened using the USM on a duplicate layer and applied using a layer mask (just sharpened the eyes, mouth, hair and jewelery/clothing). Since these are basically portraits, it is wise to avoid sharpening the facial details. Comments and suggestions welcome ~~~ jim
