Pleasant Point Historical & Railway Society: Updated
When the railway between Timaru and Fairlie in South Canterbury was closed in 1968 (I think) the permanent way was removed except for about 4 kilometers at Pleasant Point. This stretch of line was taken over by the Pleasant Point Historical and Railway Society which now maintains the line and runs trains and a model T railcar between their depot and museum at Keanes Crossing and the old Station.
The Society, which is manned entirely by volunteers, owns a main line steam locomotive, a steam shunting engine, a small diesel loco, and the Ford Model T Railcar, the latter said to be the only one of its kind left in the world.
Locomotive 699 was built at Thames (New Zealand) in 1922. In the images below it is anthropomorphised into "George" from the childrens' books "Thomas the Tank Engine" and sports a face to the front. Rolling stock is also appropriately labelled for the annual Easter (2007) celebration of "Thomas". The "Fat Controller" can be seen helping the guard in picture 3122.
