San Francisco Police Department badges are made of several metals,during the WWII. many of the SF

badges were made out of cooper because limited supply of metals. The Department did return to

sterling silver in the later years. the main hallmark for SF badges is Irvine&Jachens a family

company still in business today.

Collecting police badges is not a new hobby,since the 40's there have been well known collectors,

some of the famous collectors are Elvis (singer), Bud Abbott(comic), Buddy Hackett (comic),

Jay Leno(comic), Steven Segal (actor), Chuck Connors (cowboy actor), Jason Prestley (90210

actor), Richard Nixon (president), Johnny Cash (singer), Jodie Foster (actress), Bob Hope (comic), Gene Autry

(cowboy actor), and Dan Aykroyd (actor)these are just some of the few thousands of collectors

STRANGE BADGE HISTORY
In 1994 officer James Guelff star#1461 was shot and killed while on duty, his partner John Payne#64

was injured. In 2004 10 years later Officer Isaac Espinoza was shot and killed his badge number is

was #64 his partner Barry Parker that was injured was #1461.

On September 3, 1921 Arbuckle took a break from his hectic film schedule and drove to San Francisco

with two friends, movie directors Lowell Sherman and Fred Fischbach. The three checked into the St.

Francis Hotel, decided to have a party and invited several women to their suite. During the

arousing a 30-year-old aspiring actress named Virginia Rappe became seriously ill and was examined

by the hotel doctor, who concluded her symptoms were mostly caused by intoxication.

After two trials resulted in hung juries the third ended in an acquittal and a written apology from

the jury.

in regard to the first 6 SFPD Officers killed in line of duty-reportably portraits existed of these officers at SFPD HQ but were lost in the San Fransisco Earthquake. Copies of three have been found; however portraits of the first three are still missing. Should anyone come across the ant surviving portraits of the following officers-please email to ODMP copies of any such portraits if they still exist: Subsitiute Officer Charles J, Coots killed April 26, 1877 SFPD Officer John Nicholson killed Feb 16, 1884 SFPD # 355 SFPF Officer Edwin J Osgood killed Dc17, 1886 SFPD # 169 a concered citizen

I have an SFPD badge #229. Got it from a movie prop storage place. It might be a fake. It has a notch taken out but I think that was done for show. On the back is etched ISS 017365L. Any info?

About your first photo, "group of obsolete SF badges"... Bottom row, second from the left, there is nothing 'obsolete' about it. In fact, that's MY badge number. Though I am an Inspector now, this is exactly what my Patrol Officer Badge(s) look like.

I saw the "Tabulator" on ebay looks like a nice but out of range for me. tubulators most likely did key punch records keeping is my guess.

I'm a retired Fed who just retired here to Los Gatos. I love your website and the recognition of those who went before us. The history here is so rich that each rookie should be required to read it and add to what's here to get a sense of the tradition behind them. I have a standing metal sign that reads "No Parking Between Signs. Police Regulation." It was manufactured by "Moise-K.Co S.F." Its a great old sign for anyone who's collecting Police memorabilia. I'v been trying to find a local officer (SF or San Mateo County I think) who was a badge dealer who formerly sold at the defunct San Mateo Collector's Show and Revival at the San Mateo County Fairgrounds. (The show is long gone). I had his contact information but lost it over the years. I'm trying to replace my late father's lost LAPD Det. Lt. Badge, discontinued style so I can display it with his rare LAPD Medal of Valor. BSC stands for Bethlehem Steel Corporation (prior to WW II it was Union Iron Works and after WW II, United States Steel) in the Bayshore District. During WW II, plant guards were sworn in by SFPD as special police so that they could defend the plant with deadly force against any war saboteurs. A lot of other guards were sworn in city wide at this time. I think the US Mint security force was also sworn in by SFPD as Special Police. Go to Coit Tower and you will see it on the mural there.

I like your site, have a small collection my self, just a note on the SFCC police I was a crim. major from 1973 to 1976 it was also a student police force in the 70's not sure when it started but I was on the force1974 to 1976 star 6659. I did not pursue a career in law enforcement, I know that many that were on CCSF police at that time did.

Inspector Thomas J. Gerard star 1280 from 4/1968 until December 1993.. served in the old Tac unit, Dog Unit, Vice, Narcotics and Intelligence ( when we had one!) served as a CIA para-military officer on leave from the department 1982-1985...With the Contra war...and Ollie North. Got charged with 7 felonies related to information gathering ( intelligence ) and found not guilty..Hehehe I had Jim Lassart as my attorney.... Departed for the Philippines on the night of my aquittal and never looked back. Graduated from medical school with M.D. 1995 and have had employment in such places as Iraq, Afghanistan and Asia.....Still alive and kicking...Life is good and the retirement check continues to this day.... The down side was the previous holder of star 1280 was also arrested and aquitted...I forgot his name...but a lucky star... ( doctomasphilippines@yahoo.com)

My dads name was Ray Main I don't know to much about him. I only saw him a few times in my life. I would just like to see or get a picture of him. I know he worked as a motorcycle cop too. Thanks for the GREAT work. I retired ( Disibility, Heart Attack on the job ) in 1973. Became a member in July 1,1960, 89th Recruit Class. Going through these pictures brought back many memories, both good and bad. My badge Retired #855 has the letter A in front of the numbers and does not say Retired above the San Francisco lettering. Being a member of the SFPD was a memorable job. Thanks for the good work. Phil Payton

My grandfather was John Hanifin star #1845. He was a San Francisco Cop from the late 50s until the mid-80s. I am now joining the SFPD and was wonderin if anyone worked with him or has a funny stories with him. If so please let me know. My Father was Frank Pierce, badge #1126. He served in the 30s, 40s &, I think he retired around 1951. He served at Centeral & Park Stations, among others, under Chief Cahill. If anyone has any info. I can add to that I would appreciate it. My Grandson is now in the Santa Rosa P.D. & I'd love to leave him a legacy of his great-grandfather.

The SFPD recycles its Star numbers. The most you'll see is 4 digits. series 1-2300 is what you'll see in SF. the 3000 series is used for their reserve Offciers. 4000 series was formally the SFIAP (SF International Airport PD) but since it has merged with the SFPD, the star numbers have been integrated into the regular rotation. They just started the practice of retiring star numbers of Officers that were killed in the line of duty

Sf has single,2,3 or 4 digits, the department does recycle numbers depending on personnel needs.

You should try to contact the Patrol Special liason officer in Field Operations Bureau. The Embarcarder beat from 1st street to washington street is owned by Mr. John Andrews and next to him, from Washinton to Taylor street along the Embarcadero is Mr. Robert Burns. I know, I have the Marina beat (96) and worked for John Andrews from 1979 to persent (beat 73).......Alan Byard # 2540

Dear Friends, My dad, and his dad before him, were both patrol special officers governed by the SFPD. They owned the rights to patrol a large area in what is now know as the Embarcadero. There names are: My dad: William Edward Gallagher, born in 1915 deceased in 1971. My grandfather: Patrick Gallagher, born in Ireland, died around 1959 or early 1060. Both were residents of San Francisco while they served under the juristidiction of SFPD, with my grandfather taking up residence in San Rafael, CA. after he retired. I am trying to locate the badge number that belonged to my dad. And my grandfather, if possible. Can you give me some idea where to start? I would be so pleased.
