About the Instructor
I have been an educator, photographer and writer for the past 24 years. My articles and images have appeared in books, blogs, corporate art displays, magazines, newspapers, national park visitor center exhibits and in public relations materials for clients in the private and public sectors.
I worked as a manager for a Fortune 100 company for many years and in the communications industry for decades. At various points in my career, I have been employed as a national park ranger and professional photographer at Morristown National Historical Park, NJ., Shenandoah National Park, VA., Yosemite National Park, CA., and Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, NJ/PA.
Gear: I use Canon, Nikon and Sony digital camera systems. My lenses range from 20mm wide angle to a 500mm telephoto. My favorite lenses are the macros. I have them in normal, short telephoto and medium telephoto focal lengths.

Falling Maple Leaf
Being in the right place at the right time plus a little luck can result in beautiful and creative creative images. While hiking around Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, I caught this red maple leaf falling to the ground using a fast shutter speed.
Digital RAW files are available for sale to art directors, editors, publishers, photo researchers, stock houses, advertising/public relations agencies and other interested individuals.
Weathered Wood on an Old Barn
Understanding how your camera measures and reads light is critical to becoming an accomplished photographer. If you tried to make an image like this on the automatic modes or even on the aperture priority mode without any adjustments you would be disappointed with the result. Your photograph would be overexposed.
I teach a course on exposure and metering which is very popular. You will learn about light, tonality, and how to make professional quality images in tricky lighting situations.
Young Eastern Gray Squirrels
I have been photographing wildlife for 30 years and have accumulated a wealth of knowledge during this time. In college, I took a lot of science courses including botany, biology, ecology, zoology, wildlife management and natural resource management.
The best advice I can give someone to improve their natural history photography is to be a good naturalist. The more you know about your subjects the better photographs you will make.

Fade to Black
Most people would walk right by this and never notice its potential as an artistic photograph. Over the years, I have trained myself to notice everything even the smallest details hidden in a scene. If you do not feel you have the ability to see like an artist don't give up. This a skill that can be learned and developed.
I teach a course titled "Art of Seeing" which covers aesthetics, composition, color, design, lighting and developing a creative vision. i guarantee this lesson will improve your photography.
Black and White photography is a classic art form. To make a s sucessful balack and white photo you need a scene with a wide range of tones, contrasts and interesting shapes. As in all types of photography quality lighting is essential.
My Mission Statement
1. Help students understand and master their equipment so they can be in full control of their images.
2. Learn to see and think like an artist (assist students in developing composition/design skills and a creative vision).
3. Understand lighting and use it to create professional quality photographs.
4. Develop expertise in outdoor photography (macro, landscape, nature, people, travel, wildlife).
5. Mentor students in reaching their personal/professional goals and objectives.
If you are new to digital photography, at a beginners level or need a refresher lesson, I recommend my "Learning Your Camera" course. This private session covers camera settings and operation. The lesson will equip you with the skills needed to take control of the photographic process by relying less or not at all on the camera's automatic settings. Since this is a private class the focus is 100% on you, the equipment you use, your objectives, skill level, subject interests and your learning speed.
if you're an iPhone/Smartphone photographer or use a digital camera, consider registering for the "Art of Seeing" course. This in-depth lesson covers the aesthetic component of photography and is guaranteed to make you a better photographer. You will learn about design, composition, lighting, color, finding subjects, what makes a good photograph and what doesn't, how to make artistic photographs and how to be more creative.
Autumn Foliage
The 70,00 acre Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area located on the border of New Jersey and Pennsylvania is one of the jewels of the national park system. The recreation area is an outstanding scenic area. The park includes 40 miles of the National Wild and Scenic Delaware River.
I teach many of my courses at Delaware Water Gap. Its an ideal location for capturing a wide range of images from old homes, abandoned farms, landscapes, macros, rural life subjects, waterfalls and wildlife. I know this park intimately. I have been photographing in the national recreation area for 25 years.
Wirehaired Pointing Griffon Posing for a Portrait
Many people associate portrait photography only with images of people. A good portrait can be made of any interesting subject. I like to make portraits of people, pets, wildlife, birds, barns, old houses, flowers and landscapes. The techniques of good portrait photography are similar for all these subjects.
Country Road
I like to create artistic images using creative techniques like motion blur, selective focus, shallow depth of field, an unusual perspective, intentional over and underexposure etc. I enjoy experimenting with these techniques and and many others.

Juvenile Eastern Box Turtle in Spring
I really like finding amphibians and reptiles and photographing them. Up close, when you can see the details, amphibians and reptiles have amazing colors and textures. You will need a close focusing zoom lens or telephoto macro lens to photograph these details. If you plan on photographing small creatures up close on a regular basis purchase a true macro lens, preferably one with a focal length of at least 100 mm.
The best advice I can give someone to improve their natural history photography is to be a good naturalist. The more you know about your subjects the better photographs you will make. In addition, working fast and knowing your equipment is vital.
Ring-billed Gull In-flight
Birds are the most popular subjects among wildlife photographers by far. They are also one of the most difficult to photograph due to their size and constant movement. Birds have excellent vision which makes them difficult to get close to.
Having the right equipment for the job is key in photography. If you wish to photograph wild birds you will need at least a 300 mm lens or something longer like a 400, 500 or 600 mm lens.
Today action photos of birds are commonplace. In order to capture flying birds or any type of action photography on a consistent basis, you must be proficient with the auto focus system in the camera body and on the lens. If you are having difficulties capturing action photos its most likely your technique which is at fault and the lack of understanding how your camera's auto focus modes work.

Jumping Spider on Peony Flower
The jumping spider is a member of a group of hunting spiders that have the ability to jump or leap anywhere from 10 all the way to 40 times their own body length. Depending the specie, the spider will either jump or walk.
Because of the jumping spider’s good eyesight, their prey can be noticed anywhere from approximately one foot (30 cm) away. At this point, the jumping spider actually scans their prey; in fact their eyesight is similar to that of a zoom lens on a camera. When the prey is registered as eatable, the jumping spider will move closer. The jumping spider even catches prey much bigger than its own size. The jumping spider does not use webs to catch its prey, but they do attach a line of silk to their prey in case they happen to fall. When the jumping spider is within good distance of their prey they will actually jump or pounce on it.
Juvenile Northern Water Snake
I really like finding amphibians and reptiles and photographing them. Up close, when you can see the details, amphibians and reptiles have amazing colors and textures.
You will need a close focusing zoom lens or telephoto macro lens to photograph these details. If you plan on photographing small creatures up close on a regular basis purchase a true macro lens, preferably one with a focal length of at least 100 mm.
Northern Water Snakes live near lakes, ponds, marshes, streams, rivers, and canals; just about anywhere there is water. They are active during the day and at night. They are most often seen basking on rocks, stumps, or brush.
Gray Tree Frog
The gray tree frog is about two inches in length. It is green, gray, or brown in color. It can be a solid color, or it can have blotches on its back.
The gray tree frog can change its color in seconds. It tends to become darker when it is cold or dark. Its coloring helps it blend in with tree bark.
Due of its excellent camouflage, these frogs are extremely hard to find and photograph. You can be right next to one and never know its there. Because of its small size, a close focusing or macro lens is needed to obtain a decent image size.
Day hiking and photography are two of my favorite activities. I make some of my best nature images while on the trail. This photo was made with my Nikon 17-55 f 2.8 lens. This focal length is ideal for this kind of work. I can carry just one lens all day and enjoy the experience. Try not to burden yourself by carrying too much weight. Keep your camera kit as light and as simple as possible. I normally wouldn't use a fast aperture lens for landscape photography but the 2.8 f stop is essential when I need a shallow depth of field when making close-ups.
Colors and Patterns on a Hot-air Balloon
i made this image at a hot-air ballooning festival in Readington, NJ. While other photographers shooting next to me photographed wide views of the balloons lifting off, I zoomed my 18-200 mm lens to t its telephoto setting and concentrated on the colors and patterns.I like this image much better than the standard run of mill documentary photos of hot-air balloons.

Sleeping Red Panda
Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange, NJ. is located on 20 acres and features more than 150 species from around the world in updated naturalistic habitats. The zoo is a great place to practice your technique and learn about your camera before heading out on a major trip, safari or vacation. I teach my "Learning Your Camera" and "Zoo Photography" courses at Turtle Back. Subjects are plentiful and are always available to facilitate learning.
Snapping Turtle Portrait
One of he things I like to emphasize to my students is you don't need to travel far to exotic locations to create excellent and memorable photographs. Working close to home has many advantages including being in the right place at the right time and intimately knowing your location and the subjects found there. I find I do some of my best work within an hours drive of my home.
Snapping turtles are nocturnal and spend most of the time underwater, lying on the bottom of the waterbody. Their dark-colored skin and moss-covered shell enables the turtles to lie in wait and ambush their prey. Usually docile in water, snapping turtles can be aggressive during the breeding season when they are found traveling across land.

Eastern Chipmunk Stretching (or maybe waving to the photographer)
With digital capture, it’s very easy to take hundreds if not thousands of photographs on a shoot and hope a few turn out good. Being shutter-happy is a double-edged sword and is something I try to avoid.
Digital cameras allow us to be better photographers on one hand by providing instant feedback and the ability to correct errors on location. On the other hand, many digital photographers employ the shotgun approach to shooting which leads to sloppiness and results in a lot of wasted time downloading, previewing and editing images that fall short on quality and artistic merit.
I’m not suggesting you should be overly conservative in the number of photos taken on a particular outing given digital capture is free and you are not paying for film and processing. The point I’m making is slow down, think carefully about what you are doing and “Anticipate the Right Moment”. When you do find a good subject in the right light doing something interesting then by all means shoot quickly and capture as many images as you can.
Spring
Close up and macro photography are favorites of mine. Macro photography is very specialized. You need to be a good technician knowing your camera inside out, understand lighting, and have good composition and design skills.
Silver-Spotted Skipper Butterfly
I almost never use my camera on the automatic mode. If I did, I would not have been able to make the majority of photographs you see on this site.
To excel at photography requires: 1. An understanding of the camera system (exposure, f stops, shutter speeds, ISO, white balance, auto focus modes, lenses, flash, light metering, menu items and other important settings) and 2: The artistic component (composition, design and lighting).

Delaware National Wild and Scenic River Abstract
The 40 mile section of Delaware River contained in The Delaware Water Gap NRA is very scenic but not always easy to photograph.
This image was made on a cold, cloudy winter day in February when not much was happening. Rather than take a boring record type photograph, I decided to try an abstract. The employment of a very slow shutter speed blurred out the large sections of ice flowing down the river. By using a telephoto lens, I eliminated all visual references to what this actually is therefore, creating a successful nature abstract.
Winter is a great time to be out in the field with your camera. I can be found in the field photographing almost every day in the winter months except on the the coldest of days when the temperatures are below 20 degrees. Where I live in New Jersey, the conditions are usually mild enough to be outdoors all winter long. I find I produce some of my best images during this time of year.

Wilson's Snipe (Gallinago delicata)
The Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, located a few miles South of Morristown, NJ near Basking Ridge, is a great place to photograph landscapes and wildlife from the comfort of elevated boardwalks. The refuge encompasses over 7,000 acres of woodlands, swamp, marsh and field habitats. These varied habitats attract a wide variety of birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles.
I have been photographing at Great Swamp for more than 20 years. I know the refuge inside and out. I can usually find wildlife subjects year-round.
In addition to teaching my Nature, Landscape and Wildlife Courses at Great Swamp, I teach my Digital Camera Fundementals and Art of Seeing courses at the refuge.

Greater Fritillary Butterfly
Photography is all about light. The definition of photography is "painting with light".
The easiest and quickest way to improve your outdoor photography is to work early and late in the day and avoid midday light on bright sunny days. Lghting is the key to quality photography. Learn as much as you can about lighting. I teach several courses on this extremely important subject.

Sailboats Reflection
This is a reflection reversed upside down. I like the blurry lines and color play between the cool and warm colors.
Having a good eye and understanding composition and design is critical to becoming an accomplished photographer. A straight documentary or record shot can be boring unless the subject is unusual or uncommon.
Fallen Pine Needles
This image was made using the Sony a7 mirrorless camera. I enjoy using the a7 on hikes and for travel. The small size and light weight of the camera along with the ability to preview the histogram in the viewfinder are the reasons I started using a mirrorless camera. In the future, I plan on using both DSLRs and mirrorless cameras.

Black Bear Cubs in Spring
Over the years, I have learned ” Time Spent Equals Results Achieved”.
A good photographer leaves little to chance and luck, especially if he or she earns income from their work. I like to have control over as many variables as possible. In outdoor photography, this is not always possible since subjects as well as backgrounds are unpredictable. The one variable I do have under my control is my time and how many hours and how much effort I’m willing to put into a project.

I like the design elements in this image. The lines, circles, colors and shapes make an artistic photograph. I teach a course titled "Art of Seeing" which is very popular and one of my favorites. This lesson is guaranteed to make you a better photographer. The objective of the course is to help students transition from taking pictures to creating art.

Coleus in Bloom
I shoot RAW files files instead of Jpeg. A Jpeg file is processed by the camera to produce a finished image ready to display. A RAW file is an unprocessed image coming directly from the camera's digital sensor. RAW files require you to be competent in computer editing since the image has to be developed before being used.

Violets in Early Spring
Next to finding an interesting subject in good light an attractive background is the next thing I look for. In this example, the out of focus background as well as the color complements the subject nicely.
I carry a macro lens with me on every outing. I have macros in focal lengths ranging from 60 to 200 mm. They each have a specific purpose depending on the subject, the working distance needed and the perspective I want.

Sunset Over Lake Parsippany, NJ.
Sunrises and sunsets with the sun in the frame are favorite subjects of many photographers, especially beginner and intermediate level ones. I still enjoy making these images but most of the time I rather shoot before and after a sunrise or sunset.

Swamp Sparrow "Fluffing" to Keep Warm on a Cold Winter Day
Feathers are a good insulating material. By fluffing its feathers, a bird traps many tiny pockets of air to hold in body heat and keep out the cold.
Winter is a great time to be out in the field with your camera. I make more images in the winter than I do in the summer. I can be found in the field photographing almost every day in the winter except on the coldest of days.
Male Eastern Tiger and Spicebush Swallowtails “Puddling.”
Swallowtails are very large insects. When basking in the sun, their outspread wings can be 8 to 14 cm (3 to 5.5 inches) from tip to tip. Their colors are vibrant. Broad yellow wings are edged by black and with four stripes, like tapering chevrons from the forewing margins downward into the yellow wings.
Although they are solitary creatures, often flying high in the treetops, you can sometimes spot a special sight when a group of swallowtail "puddles" as this group is doing. Male butterflies come together at damp places in the soil and drink water. The water contains sodium ions and various amino acids, which allow them to live longer.
