Film Flashback: The Birds

I recently found this image from 1995.
It reminded me of how fun photography was
for me back then, before the explosion of
the internet, photo forums, and posting.

I kinda miss those days where I would stick in
a roll of film and just shoot! Using only modest
equipment, and shooting not for any other reason
than for pure enjoyment of seeing the pictures when
they were developed. Not for posting, not for selling,
not for anything else, but for pure pleasure.

It's funny, these days I can shoot so much more,
endlessly, and aimlessly with my digital cameras,
but the 'feel' isn't quite the same. Something's
lost, and I can't quite explain it.

That being said, as much as I love film, I have no intention
of returning to it full-time. The effort it took to clean
up this photo only reinforces that for me. Oh well, here's
to the good ole film days!

This is a perfect example of the pure enjoyment that you describe. Just reading your words really takes me back to when I was 6 years old running around the house with a Kodak Brownie Starflash around my neck photographing (with no film) the family dog. VOTE!

Sam, I still love film and wish one day I will return to it more than now.

Wow, beautiful composition, light, colors and background blur. Love it. v
I guess one has to think digital when shooting with digital cameras. It is a totally different experience.

Wonderful composition Sam. The title the birds reminded me of a movie, then again those other birds were very aggressive. A Canon EOS 10s is a great camera. V

I kind of agree with you, Sam. Film was different. Shooting film had its own appeal. There was a bit of excitement involved with waiting for the film to be developed & then waiting to get the prints back from the Lab.

However, I have never regreted my own decision to go digital. Film was a time of innocence. The goal was to get the perfect shot the first time. No 5 or 10 shots of the same subject. Digital is now a time of "doing even better".

Thanks for sharing this photo of the Birds. I know what you mean when you say it took effort to "clean up". Even digitally reproducing "new" film prints takes a bit of work. It is so much easier to shoot digitally originally than it is to scan a film print and then try to eliminate artifacts from the picture when it's put on the computer. Nevertheless, film did have its own magic.

Sam, me too I love that film feeling, and I keep going back to it, digital has taken away the magic of photography... Developing your own B&W film and prints, now that is priceless... +V

Interesting take on the digital explosion. Like the others here, I'm glad you keep going out, finding and sharing scenes from your world with the rest of us pixel peepers.

Sam, i still keep my Nikkormat FTn and still shoots with it. I know the feeling you are trying to impart to us and I agree, it seems to get lost in all the HOOPLA of megapixel wars, etc...
Excellent capture and a big VOTE!

Your comments make me think that maybe we were more spontaneous with film. You either caught the shot or you didn't. Now with the low cost of digital plus the capabilities of photo editing, I feel obliged to keep polishing and polishing until some of the fun is gone. You make a very good point. However, since our digital era expectations are largely self imposed, I suppose we could restore the sense of freedom just by choosing to do so. Now there's a challenge!

Dear SAM,
I agree with you.The time past very quick ,all change.Last time when I shoot some animal ,it was as in the past a child in front of the unique time of the discovery a magic beauty .A toy,a girl,a landscape, a love affair,a dramatic stage,a geometric detail can give to the photographer this time, the time must be stopped a short but joyed instant .The most important is to keep the child spirit and the sincerity of the object of your shoot, only for the beauty and the pleasure, not for the demonstration....SAM% in your comment I feel always a big part of sincerity it is the reason why everybody likes you..

I felt the same way with film.
But after I did the math I felt better.
Sometimes old practices are hard to change. Those were the days....:(
Excellent shot though!

Great shot - colours, the composition and the natural framing these two birds provide. BIG VOTE!
