Layers

The canyon was carved out of the plains by the Prarie-Dog-Town Fork Of The Red River.
For millions of years it has been creating this beautiful place. The walls of the canyon
consist of red clay sandstone and layers of gypsum. Many other minerals are found in the canyon
such as jasper, geods, quartz, and flint. It is a geologic wonder! The Interpretive Center near
the park entrance has displays that show how it was created, plus fossils and information on the
vast wildlife in the canyon.
