Obidos is known as the "Wedding City", and was the traditional bridal gift of the kings to their queens. The custom was begun in 1282 by Dom Dinis and Dona Isabel. 500 years ago Peniche, the city 23km west to Obidos, was still an island. The sea reached the foot of the ridge, on which Obidos stands and boots were moored below its walls.
