Montana Trout Fishing (1), July 2009

• The Big Hole River is the trout stream made in heaven and she free flows for over 150 miles without a dam. The alkaline nature of her waters result in healthy populations of browns, rainbows, cutthroats, and the Rocky Mountain whitefish, an indigenous species which fight and take flies like a trout.
• We also fished the grand Missouri and tailwater Beaverhead Rivers which had hatching PMD/ Pale Morning Duns (Ephemerella excrucians) mayflies helping us take many trout by dry fly and their nymph patterns.
• The Big Hole River Valley is straddled by the Continental Divide as the waters of this river system empties into the Gulf of Mexico.
• The area is rich in history and flanked by gorgeous mountains and majestic blue skies. The Lewis and Clark Expedition passed through this area.
• The Beaverhead River for trout starts at Clark Canyon Dam and holds many large brown trout. We were there to fish the PMD hatch on dry flies and what a challenge!
• This area of Montana is simply... magnificient! The mountains, "Big Sky," and rivers are nature's best. We saw bears, eagles, pronghorns, and elks en route to fishing or on our nature viewing hikes. Big thanks to Gerry Duerr for making this trip happen and for the photos.
• We stayed with The Complete Fly Fisher Lodge at Wise River, Montana for a week of great food, fun, and super fishing!
